Gas prices in Edmonton: keep north, south and Costco searches together

People rarely search Edmonton as one place. They type “north Edmonton”, “south Edmonton” or “Edmonton Costco”, because the city is spread out enough that the right station depends on which side you’re on. There are no live prices on this page. Instead it covers what’s taxed at the pump right now, how the Henday and the Yellowhead change the cost of a stop, and how to compare those three kinds of search fairly.

What’s in the price at an Edmonton pump

Here’s the tax picture as of November 2026:

TaxUsual rateRight now
Alberta fuel tax (gasoline)13¢/LNot collected since 1 October 2026; relief lasts until at least 31 December 2026 (alberta.ca)
Federal excise tax (gasoline)10¢/LSuspended until 31 January 2027, then 5¢/L for February and March 2027 (Finance Canada)
GST5%5%; Alberta has no PST (CRA)

The federal consumer fuel charge has been zero since 1 April 2025 (CRA). Alberta’s rate is reset every quarter from an oil-price average under its Fuel Tax Relief Program, and 1 January 2027 is the earliest it could come back.

What that means for you: none of these taxes differ from one Edmonton neighbourhood to the next. When north and south Edmonton prices pull apart, it’s retailers pricing differently, which is exactly why comparing your own side of the city is worth the effort.

Where Edmonton drivers usually fill up

Anthony Henday Drive gives 80 km of free-flow travel around the city; its last section opened in October 2016. Like any freeway, it has no roadside pumps, so a Henday fill-up always means an exit and a short drive to a station.

Inside the ring, the City of Edmonton is turning Yellowhead Trail into a freeway, removing traffic signals and direct driveway access so drivers use interchanges or parallel roads instead. A station you used to turn straight into off the Yellowhead may now need a loop through a side road. Judge it by the route on the map, not by how close the pin looks.

Keep north, south and Costco searches together

These three searches belong on one page because they answer the same question: which station near my trip is cheapest? Pick the part of Edmonton your trip actually uses and compare inside it. Widening to the other side of the city should be a deliberate choice that you’ve costed.

North–south gaps do get reported. In August 2022, Daily Hive cited GasBuddy app reports of about $1.319/L at north Edmonton stations against $1.419–$1.449/L in the south. That was one snapshot more than four years ago, not a rule. Check today’s reports rather than assuming north is cheaper.

For Costco, remember that Costco Canada describes its gas stations as members-only. Compare the club pump with an ordinary station on your route, and count any extra driving.

Using GasBuddy Edmonton results

  • Start GasBuddy Edmonton searches from a postal code or address, not the city name. For GasBuddy Edmonton north or GasBuddy Edmonton south, use a location on that side of the river.
  • Keep the grade and payment method the same when you compare across the city.
  • For GasBuddy Edmonton Costco, line the club price up against the best non-club station on your route, not against a citywide average.
  • A forecast isn’t a station report. Use forecasts for context and rank stations only on recent observations.
  • Confirm the price at the pump. Current reports are on the official GasBuddy website.

What Edmonton search results show

The Edmonton results include a local directory organised into city areas, alongside a separate price-forecast page. A forecast is a different product from a station observation. See the referenced page. Checked 4 November 2026; recheck the page before relying on it.

Edmonton worked example: is a Costco run worth it?

This is an invented comparison, not a quoted Edmonton price. Say you need 50 litres, the club pump is 6 cents per litre cheaper than the station on your commute, and getting there adds 8 km in a vehicle using 9 L/100 km, with fuel at an illustrative C$1.25/L.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving50 × 6/100C$3.00
Extra driving fuel cost8 extra km × 9 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.25 per litreC$0.90
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$2.10

The detour uses 30% of the saving, so this one can pay, provided you already have a membership and the price is confirmed. If you’d only buy a membership for fuel, that fee has to come out of savings like this one first. Try your own figures in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is gas cheaper in north Edmonton?

Sometimes, but not reliably. The 2022 gap above was reported at one moment. Compare current reports near your route on both sides, and only cross the river for fuel if the worked example still leaves a saving.

Is Costco gas in Edmonton worth the trip?

It can be when you’re already going there or the extra distance is small. It’s rarely worth a separate cross-city drive for a small top-up. The Costco gas price guide walks through membership and payment conditions.
