Costco gas prices: calculate the saving you can actually use
A Costco pump price is only a saving if you can fill up there, pay the way you planned and get there without burning the difference. Searching GasBuddy Costco is a sensible first step, because it shows recent reports for each warehouse’s gas station next to the stations around it. The rest of this guide covers the rules that decide whether that number applies to you, which are different in Canada and the US, and the arithmetic that turns a posted price into the money you’d keep.
Who can buy Costco gas
In Canada, Costco says its gas stations follow the same members-only principle as its warehouses (Costco Canada membership answer). Some details from that page are worth knowing before you pull in:
- You activate the pump with a current membership card before paying by credit card.
- If your card is inactive or expired, you get one warning and one courtesy pump. After that, purchases are blocked until you renew at the Membership Counter.
- A CIBC Costco Mastercard only works on its own if it’s also your membership card.
In the US, Costco’s gasoline Q&A also says the fuel station is for members only, with one exception: customers using a prepaid Costco Shop Card don’t need to be members (Costco gasoline Q&A). Don’t assume that exception applies in Canada; the Canadian pages don’t offer it.
Don’t buy a membership on the strength of one good price screenshot. Estimate how much fuel you’d really buy there in a year and set the saving against the membership cost.
How you can pay at the pump
| Canada | US | |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card | Mastercard (credit and debit) | Visa |
| Debit | Debit cards | Most PIN debit cards |
| Costco Shop Card | Physical cards only (digital not accepted) | Prepaid Shop Cards |
| Cash | Not accepted | Not listed |
| Source | Costco Canada payment answer | Costco gasoline Q&A |
One US detail that catches people out: when you pay with a PIN debit card or Visa, Costco asks the card issuer for a pre-authorization of up to $150 before you start fueling. Costco then sends the actual amount, and your bank is responsible for releasing the hold (Costco gas station FAQ). If your account is running low, that hold can matter more than the few cents you save.
Executive membership rewards don’t cover gas
If you’re counting on the Executive 2% Reward to sweeten the deal, it won’t. In the US, Costco says Rewards are not calculated on gasoline (Costco Executive Rewards). In Canada, purchases at Costco gas stations are excluded from the reward calculation, and reward coupons can’t be spent at the gas station either (Costco Canada membership conditions). Compare the pump price on its own.
Check the grade and the hours
Costco’s US Q&A says its regular fuel is typically 87 octane and premium typically 91, and that its fuels are certified to TOP TIER standards. It also notes that Oregon and New Jersey stations are full-service, as state law requires. Always compare the same grade at both stations: a premium price against a regular price tells you nothing. Gas station hours vary by warehouse, and Costco directs members to its warehouse locator for local hours and prices (Costco gas station FAQ), so check before a late-evening run.
Compare one real alternative
Pick a non-club station that fits the same trip. Write down the grade, payable price, report time and full address of both. You’re comparing those two purchases, not a Costco’s best price somewhere in your region against an area average.
Worked example: a worthwhile stop can become a poor detour
These are hypothetical Canadian inputs. You’re buying 45 litres, and the Costco is 6 cents a litre cheaper than the station on your route.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross saving | 45 L × C$0.06 | C$2.70 |
| Extra driving fuel cost | 12 km × 8 L/100 km = 0.96 L × C$1.60/L | C$1.54 |
| Net saving before time and membership | Gross saving − extra fuel | C$1.16 |
More than half the saving goes on the detour. If you were shopping at the warehouse anyway and the fuel stop adds almost no driving, you’d keep close to the full C$2.70. Don’t charge the whole shopping trip to fuel, but don’t ignore the distance of a fuel-only run either. If you’re comparing a US price in gallons with a Canadian one in litres, convert first with the fuel price converter, then run your own trip in the trip fuel cost calculator.
Do I need a membership to buy gas at Costco?
In Canada, yes: Costco’s gas stations are members-only. In the US, membership is required too, except for customers paying with a prepaid Costco Shop Card.
Why might Costco be missing from GasBuddy?
Check your search area and filters, then look at the warehouse’s exact spot on the map. A missing result isn’t proof there’s no gas station. GasBuddy’s station help specifically covers club stations and filters.
Can I assume Costco is always cheapest?
No. Check the specific location and the report time. This guide doesn’t rank retailers or promise a fixed discount.
