Gas prices in High River: verify a local stop before widening the search

High River has fewer stations than the city up the road, and that changes the maths. A local pump you can check usually beats a lower number you’d have to drive for. We don’t list live prices; this page helps you decide when widening the search is worth it.

What’s in the price at a High River pump

High River pays the same taxes as the rest of Alberta. As of November 2026:

  • The province’s 13¢/L fuel tax isn’t being collected. The suspension started on 1 October 2026 and runs until at least 31 December 2026 (alberta.ca).
  • The federal excise tax, normally 10¢/L on gasoline, is suspended to 31 January 2027 and then charged at 5¢/L until 31 March 2027 (Finance Canada).
  • GST is 5% and there’s no PST (CRA).

Because none of this changes between High River, Okotoks and Calgary, tax is never a reason to drive north for fuel. It does matter for timing. Alberta resets its rate on 1 January, April, July and October from an oil-price average (Fuel Tax Relief Program), so if you’re filling a truck and a jerry can close to a quarter date, check whether the rate is about to change.

Where High River drivers usually fill up

The Town of High River describes itself as just south of Calgary on Highway 2. The same page points visitors to Highway 2A via the Turner Valley–Black Diamond drive, and to the Cowboy Trail (Highway 22) for a scenic route.

Those routes suggest two habits. On a Highway 2 run to Calgary, a station you pass anyway is a fair comparison with a local one. Before a rural loop out west, fill in town rather than counting on a station along the way that you haven’t checked.

Start with a High River station you can reach easily and check how recent its report is before looking further afield. Keep a second local option as well, so a stale report doesn’t turn a simple fill-up into several unplanned detours. A distant low price only helps if the trip there still leaves a saving.

Using GasBuddy High River results

Start GasBuddy High River lookups with a station you can conveniently reach, such as the Esso on 11 Avenue SE listed in the research, and check the report time. Note a second local option in case the first price is stale. Only bring in stations outside town if the saving survives the extra driving in the example below. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website and confirm the price at the pump.

What High River search results show

Esso’s operator page identifies a High River station at 701 11 Avenue SE. See the referenced page. Checked 4 November 2026; recheck the page before relying on it.

High River worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

This is an invented comparison, not a quoted High River price. Say you’ll buy 50 litres, a station is 5 cents per litre cheaper, and reaching it adds 10 km at 8 L/100 km, with fuel at an illustrative C$1.25/L.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving50 × 5/100C$2.50
Extra driving fuel cost10 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.25 per litreC$1.00
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$1.50

A 10 km detour leaves C$1.50, which may or may not be worth your time. A separate trip up Highway 2 just for fuel is different: a hypothetical 100 km round trip at the same consumption burns 8 litres (C$10.00), far more than you’d save on one tank. Test your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is it worth driving to Okotoks or Calgary for cheaper gas?

Only when you’re going there anyway. The taxes are identical, so any gap is a station’s own price, and a dedicated round trip usually costs more in fuel than it saves.

How should I compare a distant station with a local option?

Use the amount you’ll actually buy and count the whole extra journey. If the distant price is unconfirmed, treat the saving as a maybe, not a guarantee.
