BC gas prices: compare local stops, not just regional numbers
British Columbia doesn’t have one fuel tax rate. It has three, and where the lines fall explains a lot of the price differences you’ll see on GasBuddy BC listings. We don’t publish live prices, so use the city guides below to read local results properly, then check a current report before you drive. When you search GasBuddy BC, narrow the results to the municipality you’ll actually pass through; Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley listings often cross city lines.

B.C.’s three fuel tax zones
As of November 2026, the B.C. Ministry of Finance sets these motor fuel tax rates on regular gasoline:
| Zone | Who’s in it | B.C. motor fuel tax |
|---|---|---|
| Vancouver area (TransLink) | The Metro Vancouver region, from Lions Bay and Bowen Island east to Langley, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows | 27.00¢/L (1.75¢ general + 6.75¢ BCTFA + 18.50¢ TransLink) |
| Victoria area (BC Transit) | Incorporated areas of the Capital Regional District, plus part of the Juan de Fuca area; Salt Spring and the Outer Gulf Islands are excluded | 20.00¢/L (7.75¢ + 6.75¢ + 5.50¢ BC Transit) |
| Rest of B.C. | Everywhere else, including the Fraser Valley, Kamloops and the Okanagan | 14.50¢/L (7.75¢ + 6.75¢) |
Diesel is half a cent higher in each zone. The regional portion depends on where the fuel is sold, not where you drive it.
On top of that, for every zone:
- B.C. carbon tax: zero. The province eliminated it effective 1 April 2025.
- Federal excise tax: zero for now. It’s normally 10¢/L on gasoline, but Ottawa has suspended it until 31 January 2027. Finance Canada says it would be 5¢/L from 1 February to 31 March 2027 and the full 10¢/L from 1 April 2027.
- GST: 5%. It’s charged on the whole price, including the fuel taxes. Provincial sales tax doesn’t apply to gasoline.
Where the price line actually falls
The most useful boundary for drivers is between Langley and Abbotsford. The Township of Langley, including Aldergrove, is a Metro Vancouver member; Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission and Hope are in the Fraser Valley Regional District. Crossing that line drops the provincial tax by 12.5¢ a litre, about 13.1¢ with GST. Stations aren’t obliged to pass that on, but it’s why Fraser Valley prices are so often compared with Metro Vancouver ones.
Inside Metro Vancouver, by contrast, the tax is identical from Vancouver to Coquitlam to Langley. A cheaper station in the next municipality is cheaper because of the station, not the tax. The Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam guides show how easily those neighbouring listings get mixed up.
Estimates cannot choose a winning station
Some BC results separate area estimates from posted station prices; the Kelowna example shows that distinction. If every station shows the same area estimate, you have a budgeting figure, not a tie for cheapest fuel. Rank only stations with a recent report, and leave missing prices unranked. A missing observation doesn’t mean a station is closed or out of fuel.
Calculate the whole added journey
A hypothetical 50-litre fill at a 4-cent-per-litre saving saves C$2.00 before travel. An extra 10 km at 9 L/100 km and C$1.80/L costs C$1.62 in fuel, which leaves C$0.38 before your time.
Road routing, not a map radius, determines the extra kilometres. Compare the planned journey with and without the stop. A station already on your route needs a different calculation from a dedicated fuel trip. The trip fuel cost calculator does the arithmetic.
Why is gas more expensive in Vancouver than the rest of B.C.?
Tax is a big part of it. The Vancouver-area motor fuel tax is 27.00¢ a litre against 14.50¢ outside the TransLink and Victoria regions, a 12.5¢ difference before GST. The rest is down to how individual stations price, so the actual gap at the pump moves around from day to day.
Is gas cheaper in B.C. or Alberta right now?
Alberta has a lower tax for the moment: Natural Resources Canada notes that Alberta has paused its 13¢-a-litre provincial fuel tax from 1 October to 31 December 2026. That’s a temporary measure, so check the current rate before planning a fill-up around it.
