Gas prices in Lloydminster: keep both provincial labels visible

Lloydminster is one city in two provinces, so its stations show up under both Alberta and Saskatchewan, and each side has its own fuel tax law. We don’t show live prices. What this page does is set out, from the two provinces’ own documents, how the tax gap between the sides works right now, and why that gap doesn’t automatically appear at the pump.

What’s in the price on each side of the border

As of November 2026:

Alberta sideSaskatchewan side
Provincial fuel tax on gasolineNot collected since 1 October 2026; normally 13¢/L (alberta.ca)15¢/L (Saskatchewan bulletin FT-1)
Saskatchewan border assistance paid to fuel dealersNot applicable15¢/L on gasoline and diesel in Lloydminster from 1 October 2026 (bulletin FT-2)
Federal excise tax on gasolineSuspended until 31 January 2027Same
GST5%5%

The federal excise suspension and its half-rate step in February and March 2027 come from Finance Canada. GST is from the CRA rate table.

The second row is the part most drivers don’t know about. Saskatchewan runs a Fuel Competition Assistance Program for fuel dealers along the Alberta and Manitoba borders. Bulletin FT-2 (revised October 2026) says the assistance is based on the tax-rate difference between Saskatchewan and the neighbouring province, and it lists Lloydminster and Onion Lake as their own zone. When Alberta collected its full 13¢, that zone’s rate was 2¢/L, which is the gap between 15¢ and 13¢. From 1 October 2026, with Alberta’s tax suspended, it’s 15¢/L.

In plain terms, the program is designed so a Saskatchewan-side dealer isn’t carrying a tax handicap against a competitor across the street. It’s paid to dealers, though, and doesn’t set pump prices. So don’t assume the Alberta side is 15¢ cheaper, or that both sides match. Compare the prices actually posted.

Where Lloydminster drivers usually fill up

The city’s border markers stand on the provincial boundary at the crossing of Highways 16 and 17, next to City Hall. That means crossing provinces for fuel can be a very short drive, so the detour is usually small. The worked example below shows when it’s worth it.

Heading further into Saskatchewan changes things. FT-2 gives smaller assistance to stations up to 24 km from Alberta competition (7.5¢/L from 1 October 2026) and 24–56 km away (3.8¢/L), and none beyond that. A station deep in Saskatchewan carries the full 15¢ provincial tax with no offset, while Alberta’s is suspended. That’s a tax fact, not a price promise, but it’s a good reason to compare Lloydminster prices before a long drive east.

Keep both provincial labels visible

Lloydminster results show up under both provinces, and that isn’t an error or a duplicate. Keep the full address and province in each row of your shortlist, and compare final displayed prices in the same grade. What matters is what you’d pay at each real location.

Using GasBuddy Lloydminster results

  • GasBuddy Lloydminster results may list stations under either province. Search from your own address so stations on both sides appear together.
  • Note the province on each listing; it tells you which tax regime that station falls under.
  • Compare the same grade and check report times, especially around 1 January, when Alberta can next change its rate and Saskatchewan’s assistance rate may follow.
  • Confirm the price at the pump. Current reports are on the official GasBuddy website.

Lloydminster worked example: is crossing the border worth it?

This is an invented comparison, not a quoted Lloydminster price. Say you need 40 litres, a station on the other side is 4 cents per litre cheaper, and getting there adds 3 km at 9 L/100 km, with fuel at an illustrative C$1.25/L.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving40 × 4/100C$1.60
Extra driving fuel cost3 extra km × 9 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.25 per litreC$0.34
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$1.26

Because the border runs through the city, the extra driving is small and takes only about a fifth of the saving. A short hop pays here once the lower price is confirmed. Try your own figures in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is gas cheaper on the Alberta side of Lloydminster?

Not necessarily. On paper the Alberta side pays no provincial fuel tax right now and the Saskatchewan side pays 15¢/L, but Saskatchewan’s assistance to Lloydminster dealers is set at the same 15¢/L. Retailers then set their own prices, so compare actual posted prices on both sides.

Should I fill up in Lloydminster before driving into Saskatchewan?

Often it’s worth checking. Saskatchewan stations more than 56 km from Alberta competition get no border assistance under FT-2, so they bear the full provincial tax gap while Alberta’s tax is suspended. Compare a Lloydminster price with one on your route before you leave.
