Sam’s Club gas prices: compare the exact fuel center
Sam’s Club prices are set location by location, so the useful question is never “is Sam’s cheap?” but “is this fuel center cheaper than the station already on my route, for me, today?” If you found the club through GasBuddy Sam’s Club results, open that individual listing first: each fuel center has its own price, report time and conditions. This guide covers who can actually buy fuel there, which perks change the price you pay, and how to tell whether the trip is worth it.
Who can fill up at a Sam’s Club fuel center
Most Sam’s Club fuel stations are restricted to members, and you need a valid membership to buy fuel unless local law prohibits that restriction. A small number are open to the general public, either because they share a site with a Walmart store or because the law requires public access. At those public stations, Sam’s Club says members and Walmart+ users get a 5-cent discount, except in New Jersey (Sam’s Club fuel center details).
To check a specific club, open its page from the club finder and look for gas prices. Sam’s Club says that if a club page has no gas prices section, that club may not have a fuel center. The chain’s fuel page links to local fuel information. Verify the hours and grades for the specific center before setting off; a warehouse’s general listing isn’t a substitute.
Sam’s Club and Canada
There are no Sam’s Club fuel centers to compare in Canada. Walmart Canada closed its six Sam’s Club warehouses, all in Ontario, in 2009 (The Globe and Mail). If you’re in Canada and searching for a warehouse-club fill, our Costco guide covers the Canadian membership and payment rules.
Paying at the pump
Sam’s Club says its fuel centers accept Walmart gift cards and Sam’s Club gift and credit cards, among other eligible payment methods. A Sam’s Club Mastercard works where the fuel center accepts that type of card, so check the pump signage. Gift cards that are only a barcode can’t be scanned at the pump, but magnetic-stripe cards can (Sam’s Club fuel center details). Whatever you use, compare the price for that payment method, not a different one shown on the listing.
Club, Plus and Walmart+: what changes the price
Both Club and Plus members get member-only prices at Sam’s Club fuel stations, according to Sam’s Club’s membership benefits page. The bigger recent change is for Plus members. From October 20, 2026, Sam’s Club Plus includes a Walmart+ Annual membership at no extra cost for the eligible primary Plus member (Sam’s Club help). Walmart+ includes gas savings of up to 10 cents a gallon at participating stations, of which WCAX reported there are more than 17,000. You have to activate or link the Walmart+ account to use it.
That matters for comparisons in two ways. First, the cheapest stop for a Plus member might not be a Sam’s Club at all, if a participating station on your route takes 10 cents off. Second, only count a discount you’ll actually get at the pump today. Keep card cash back, rewards paid later and capped promotions out of the comparison, and check the current terms yourself before relying on any of them.
A simple US example
These figures are hypothetical, not current prices. You’re buying 12 US gallons, the club is 15 cents per gallon cheaper than the station on your route, and the visit adds 8 miles.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross saving | 12 × 15/100 | US$1.80 |
| Extra driving fuel cost | 8 extra miles ÷ 25 mpg × US$3.50 per gallon | US$1.12 |
| Net saving before time and membership | Gross saving − extra fuel | US$0.68 |
The detour eats 62% of the saving, leaving 68 cents. Use the amount you’ll really buy: plugging in a full tank when you only need a top-up makes the saving look bigger than it is. Try your own figures in the trip fuel cost calculator.
One chain, several different decisions
When two club locations appear, compare their full addresses and report times separately. The closer one may have a different price or fuel selection. Don’t move a price from one listing to another just because they share a name. Our Cincinnati guide shows how this plays out in a city where Sam’s Club runs more than one fuel center.
Do I need a Sam’s Club membership to buy gas?
At most locations, yes. A small number of Sam’s Club fuel stations, those sharing a site with a Walmart or required by law to serve the public, are open to non-members.
What if GasBuddy doesn’t show the club?
Check the map area and remove any filters you don’t need, then confirm through the club’s own page whether it has a fuel center. Missing data is a question to answer, not a reason to guess at a price.
