Gas prices in Springfield, Missouri: use the state and exact club location
Type “Springfield” into any gas app and you’re gambling on which state it picks, since many US states have one. Once you’ve pinned it to Missouri, there’s another thing worth knowing that most drivers miss: part of the state gas tax you pay here can be claimed back. We don’t publish live prices. This page covers the tax, the refund, and how to compare Springfield stations without mixing up locations.
What’s in the price at a Springfield pump
As of November 2026, each gallon of gasoline in Missouri includes:
- 18.4 cents federal tax, identical in every state (U.S. Energy Information Administration).
- 29.5 cents Missouri motor fuel tax, the rate since July 1, 2025. It rose in steps from 17 cents, starting October 1, 2021 (Missouri Department of Revenue).
The state tax is the same at every Missouri station, so it never explains why one Springfield station is cheaper than another. What it does create is a refund opportunity.
Getting part of the Missouri gas tax back
Missouri lets drivers claim back the increase over the old 17-cent rate. On fuel bought since July 1, 2025, that’s 12.5 cents a gallon. The main conditions, from the Department of Revenue’s Senate Bill 262 FAQ and its motor fuel FAQ:
- The fuel must be used on the highway in a vehicle with a gross weight of 26,000 pounds or less.
- You file after the fiscal year ends (Missouri’s runs July to June): claims are accepted from July 1 to September 30. For fuel bought between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027, that means July 1 to September 30, 2027. The window for the year ending June 30, 2026 closed on September 30, 2026.
- You can file online through MyTax Missouri or on Form 4923-H.
- You don’t mail receipts, but you must keep them for three years. They need the vehicle identification number, date of sale, your name and address, the seller’s name and address, and the gallons purchased, with Missouri fuel tax shown.
For a sense of scale, take a hypothetical driver buying 12 gallons a week: over a year that is 624 gallons, which at 12.5 cents comes to US$78. The refund doesn’t change which station is cheaper (it’s the same per gallon everywhere in Missouri), but it’s a reason to keep proper receipts. A simple fuel logbook makes the claim much easier.
Where Springfield drivers usually fill up
I-44 runs along the north side of the city. MoDOT’s $70.7 million project to widen I-44 to six lanes between Kansas Expressway and US 65 is expected to finish in May 2027, and it has brought ramp closures along the way (KY3, October 2026). Before you commit to a station on the far side of an interchange, check that the ramp you need is open.
One large I-44 stop is Buc-ee’s, which opened its first Missouri location in north Springfield, off I-44, on December 11, 2023, with 120 fueling positions (KY3). If you’re on I-44 anyway, it’s an easy stop to compare. A special trip there from the south side of town is a different calculation.
Compare each club location on its own
Sam’s Club has a fuel-center page for 745 W El Camino Alto Street in Springfield (checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). If more than one location from the same retailer shows up, treat them as separate stations with their own price, report time and distance. Then compare the one that fits your trip with a non-club station already on your route.
Using GasBuddy Springfield MO results
- Search “Springfield MO” or use a Springfield ZIP code so you don’t get Springfield, Illinois or another state’s Springfield.
- Match full addresses for club and chain stations. The name alone doesn’t tell you which location reported the price.
- Compare like with like: same grade, same payment method.
- Check the ramp, not just the map, while I-44 work continues.
- Start with current reports on the official GasBuddy website, then confirm the price at the pump.
Springfield worked example: is the extra drive worth it?
This is a hypothetical example, not a quoted Springfield price. You’re buying 12 US gallons, and a club fuel center posts a price 16 cents per gallon lower than the station on your route, but it adds 8 miles.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross saving | 12 × 16/100 | US$1.92 |
| Extra driving fuel cost | 8 extra miles ÷ 25 mpg × US$3.50 per gallon | US$1.12 |
| Net saving before time and other costs | Gross saving − extra fuel | US$0.80 |
The detour uses about 58% of the saving and leaves 80 cents, before time and any membership cost. The Missouri refund doesn’t tip the balance either way, because you’d claim the same 12.5 cents a gallon at either station. Rerun it with your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.
Can I get the Missouri gas tax back?
Part of it. If your vehicle weighs 26,000 pounds or less and you drive on the road, you can claim the 12.5 cents a gallon increase between July 1 and September 30 after each fiscal year. Keep your receipts, and file online or on Form 4923-H.
Will gas prices in Springfield, MO be lower tomorrow?
We can’t forecast prices and won’t pretend to. The Missouri tax rate itself isn’t scheduled to change: 29.5 cents was the final step of the 2021 increase, reached on July 1, 2025. For tomorrow’s fill, the most useful information is the latest reports for stations on your actual route.
Should I compare two Springfield club locations as one option?
No. Keep each full address and report time separate, pick the location that fits your trip, then compare its price with a convenient alternative.
