Gas price converter: litres, gallons and currency
A Canadian price like 159.9¢ a litre and a US price like $3.49 a gallon use different units and currencies. Convert one into the other before deciding which is cheaper.

FREE TOOLHow to convert cents per litre to dollars per gallon
One US gallon is 3.785 litres. Divide the Canadian price in cents by 100 to get dollars per litre, multiply by 3.785 to get Canadian dollars per gallon, then divide by the exchange rate to get US dollars per gallon. For example, 159.9¢/L is C$1.599 per litre, or C$6.05 per gallon; at C$1.40 per US dollar, that is about US$4.32 per gallon.
Is gas cheaper in the US than in Canada?
Often the converted US price is lower, but it depends on the state, the province and the day’s exchange rate. A fuel-only trip across the border also costs time and driving, and your card may add a foreign transaction fee. Convert first, then count the full trip with our trip cost calculator.
Imperial gallons are different
This converter uses US gallons (3.785 L). An imperial gallon, still mentioned in some older Canadian sources, is about 4.546 L, so do not mix the two.
For border towns, our Niagara Falls and Sarnia guides show what else to count beyond the exchange rate.
