Gas prices in Niagara Falls, Ontario: separate Canadian and US comparisons

Living in Niagara Falls, you’ll hear that gas is cheaper “over the bridge” in New York. Sometimes the pump price is lower; whether the trip saves you money is a different question. We don’t show live prices, but this page shows how to convert a US price properly, what a crossing costs before you even reach a pump, and how to keep the Ontario-side comparison useful on its own.

What’s in the price on each side of the river

On the Ontario side, every station pays the same taxes. As of November 2026:

  • Ontario gasoline tax: 9.0¢ per litre of unleaded, included in the posted price (Ontario Ministry of Finance).
  • Federal excise tax: suspended until 31 January 2027, then 5¢ per litre to 31 March 2027 and 10¢ from 1 April 2027 (Finance Canada).
  • HST: 13% (CRA), applied to the price including those per-litre taxes (NRCan).
  • No consumer carbon charge since 1 April 2025 (Finance Canada).

On the New York side, prices are built on US federal and New York State fuel taxes, which are set and charged differently. We haven’t quoted US rates here; what matters for you is the final pump price, converted properly. And note the timing: the Canadian side’s federal excise tax is zero right now but comes back in February and April 2027, which will shift the cross-border gap even if nothing changes in New York.

Converting a US price: units and currency

A US price is in US dollars per US gallon. An Ontario price is in Canadian cents per litre. To compare:

  1. Divide the US price by 3.785 to get US dollars per litre.
  2. Multiply by the exchange rate (Canadian dollars per US dollar). The Bank of Canada publishes a daily rate; it was 1.3994 on 3 November 2026 (Bank of Canada). Your card’s rate may be worse, and some cards add a foreign-transaction fee, so check your own card terms.
  3. Multiply by 100 for cents per litre.

Our fuel price converter does all three steps for you.

What a fuel-only crossing costs

  • Bridge toll. Since 1 May 2025 the passenger-car toll on the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges has been US$6.00 or C$8.50 cash (WKBW). It’s collected one way, on the trip into Canada (EZ Border Crossing), so you pay it on the way home.
  • Border waits, twice. CBSA posts current wait times for the Rainbow Bridge and the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge (CBSA border wait times). Your US-bound wait is extra.
  • Extra driving to reach a station and get back to the bridge.

Where Niagara Falls drivers usually fill up

For an Ontario-side fill, the comparison is simpler: stations in the same grade, near where you’re already driving. Costco’s Niagara Falls warehouse at 7500 Pin Oak Dr lists a gas station (Costco Niagara Falls); it’s members-only, and our Costco gas guide covers the rules. If you’re heading to St. Catharines or Welland anyway, compare there too.

Using GasBuddy Niagara Falls results

  1. Check which Niagara Falls you’re looking at. Searches mix Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, NY. Ontario stations show cents per litre; US ones show dollars per gallon.
  2. Check the report time. Local sites republish GasBuddy prices; the Niagara Guide, for example, names GasBuddy as the source of its Niagara Falls price page (Niagara Guide, checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). A republished number is only as fresh as the report behind it.
  3. Compare the same grade. Match the octane number, not just the grade name.
  4. Convert before you compare, then subtract the toll and extra driving.
  5. Confirm at the pump. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.

Niagara Falls worked example: is a US fill worth the crossing?

This is a hypothetical comparison; none of these prices are real quotes. You’d buy 45 litres. The Ontario price is 150.0¢ per litre. A New York station shows US$3.40 per gallon. We use C$1.40 per US dollar (rounded for the example), the C$8.50 cash toll, and 12 km of extra driving at 8 L/100 km, priced at the Ontario C$1.50 per litre.

ItemCalculationResult
US price in C$ per litre3.40 × 1.40 ÷ 3.785C$1.2576
Price gap per litre1.500 − 1.2576C$0.2424
Gross saving45 × 0.2424C$10.91
Bridge toll (paid coming home)Cash tollC$8.50
Extra driving fuel cost12 km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.50C$1.44
Net saving before time and other costs10.91 − 8.50 − 1.44C$0.97

A 24-cent-a-litre gap sounds huge, but the toll takes most of it and you’re left with under a dollar, before two border lines and any card fees. If you were crossing anyway, the toll isn’t extra and the sum looks much better. Try other figures in the fuel price converter and the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is gas cheaper in Niagara Falls, NY?

Sometimes the converted pump price is lower, sometimes it isn’t; it depends on both markets and the exchange rate on the day. For a fuel-only trip, the toll and wait usually decide it. Convert first, then subtract the crossing costs.

Does a bigger number on a US price mean it’s more expensive?

No. US dollars per gallon and Canadian cents per litre are different measures. Convert both the units and the currency first.

Will Niagara gas prices change tomorrow?

We can’t say. For the Ontario side, Gas Wizard publishes next-day forecasts for “Niagara” as a region rather than for Niagara Falls on its own (Gas Wizard), with wholesale forecasting by Dan McTeague of Canadians for Affordable Energy (about). It’s a Canadian service, so a cross-border decision still comes down to converting the two pump prices on the day.
