Gas prices in Ottawa: search from where your trip actually goes
Ottawa is spread out, and it sits on a provincial border, so “cheapest in Ottawa” is rarely the right question. You want the cheapest confirmed price near where you’ll be: Barrhaven, Orléans, Kanata, downtown, or across the river in Gatineau under Quebec’s tax rules. We don’t show live prices, but this page explains what you’re comparing.
What’s in the price at an Ottawa pump
On the Ontario side, as of November 2026, a litre of regular carries:
- Ontario gasoline tax of 9.0 cents, collected at the wholesale level and included in the pump price (Ontario Ministry of Finance).
- Federal excise tax of zero for now. It’s normally 10 cents, but was suspended from 20 April 2026 and stays suspended until 31 January 2027. Finance Canada says it would come back at 5 cents in February and March 2027 and at the full rate from 1 April 2027 (Department of Finance Canada).
- 13% HST (CRA rates table), applied on top of the fuel cost, margins and those per-litre taxes (Natural Resources Canada).
There has been no federal consumer carbon charge since 1 April 2025 (Finance Canada).
The Gatineau question: a different tax system across the river
Five interprovincial crossings link Ottawa and Gatineau (Public Services and Procurement Canada), so Quebec stations often turn up in an Ottawa search. They price under different rules:
| Ottawa (Ontario) | Gatineau (Quebec) | |
|---|---|---|
| Provincial fuel tax | 9.0¢/L | 19.2¢/L at the general rate |
| Sales tax on fuel | 13% HST | 5% GST + 9.975% QST |
| Provincial carbon pricing on fuel | None | Quebec is the only province that still collects one |
Sources: Natural Resources Canada for the provincial rates and carbon pricing; CRA for sales tax rates.
Two cautions. First, Quebec reduces its fuel tax in certain border, outlying and specific regions (CAA-Québec), so don’t assume the 19.2-cent rate applies at every Gatineau station. Second, a tax table can’t tell you which side is cheaper on a given day, because margins differ too. Compare actual recent reports from both sides, then count the bridge trip.
How Ottawa compares with the rest of Ontario
The Ontario government publishes weekly average pump prices, taxes included, for a set of markets that includes Ottawa (motor fuel prices; weekly dataset). Our calculation from that data: over the 52 weeks to 2 November 2026, Ottawa’s regular unleaded figure was below the Ontario average in 37 of them and level with it in five more. Across the whole period it averaged 1.2 cents a litre below Ontario and about 2.3 cents below Toronto East. On 2 November 2026 the figures were 172.4 cents in Ottawa and 175.1 cents for Ontario.
That’s a city-wide average, not something you can buy. It’s useful for one thing: telling you whether a “deal” you’ve been offered is actually unusual.
Where Ottawa drivers usually fill up
Costco lists gas stations at its Barrhaven warehouse on Strandherd Drive and its Gloucester warehouse on Blair Towers Place. Membership is required; see our Costco gas price guide. For everyone else, the useful rule is the one this page started with: decide whether you need fuel near your departure, near your destination or on the way, and run those as three separate searches.
An Ottawa directory returned by search lists stations with individual addresses and observation ages (gaswiser.com Ottawa, checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). Those ages matter more than the ranking.
Using GasBuddy Ottawa results
- Set GasBuddy Ottawa to your actual starting point or destination, not the default city centre. A downtown-centred list is little help in Orléans.
- If results look far away, move the search point rather than widening the radius. A wider radius adds stations you won’t drive to.
- If a Gatineau station appears, check its address says Quebec and treat it as a separate option with its own bridge time.
- Compare one grade and recent report times, then confirm the pump price. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.
Ottawa worked example: is a Gatineau fill worth the bridge?
This is invented for the arithmetic, not a quoted price on either side. Say a Gatineau station is 3 cents per litre cheaper, you need 40 litres, and the crossing and return add 10 km.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross saving | 40 × 3/100 | C$1.20 |
| Extra driving fuel cost | 10 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litre | C$1.28 |
| Net saving before time and other costs | Gross saving − extra fuel | −C$0.08 |
The trip costs slightly more than it saves, before bridge traffic. If you’re already crossing for another reason, count only the extra distance to the station and it may work out. Run your own figures in the trip fuel cost calculator.
Is gas cheaper in Gatineau than Ottawa?
Sometimes, sometimes not. Quebec’s provincial fuel tax and combined sales tax are higher than Ontario’s, but the posted price also depends on station margins, and some Quebec regions get a reduced fuel tax. Compare recent reports from both sides on the day.
Should I compare an Ottawa forecast with a pump report?
Use the forecast only to decide when to fill. Use actual station reports to decide where.
