Gas prices in Ajax: read the full address when station names differ
We don’t publish live Ajax prices. What we can do is help you avoid the most common Ajax mistake: trusting a short station label that names an intersection, then finding the entrance is on the far side of a busy road. In a town where most fuel decisions happen near a Highway 401 ramp, that extra turn and return can cost more than the few cents you were chasing.
What’s in the price at an Ajax pump
Every station in Ajax charges the same set of taxes, so taxes never explain why one Ajax station is cheaper than another. As of November 2026 the pump price includes:
- Ontario gasoline tax: 9.0¢ per litre of unleaded, built into the posted price rather than shown on your receipt (Ontario Ministry of Finance).
- Federal excise tax: suspended until 31 January 2027 under Bill C-38. It comes back at 5¢ per litre from 1 February to 31 March 2027 and returns to the full 10¢ on 1 April 2027 (Finance Canada).
- HST: 13% in Ontario (Canada Revenue Agency), charged on top of the product cost, margins and the per-litre taxes (Natural Resources Canada).
The consumer carbon charge no longer applies; it was removed on 1 April 2025 (Finance Canada). One practical point: the excise tax was suspended on 20 April 2026, so if you compare a receipt from this autumn with one from February 2027, part of the difference will be that tax coming back, not the station.
Where Ajax drivers usually fill up
Ajax sits along Highway 401, and north–south regional roads such as Westney Road and Salem Road cross it (Region of Durham notice). Kingston Road, where Costco’s Ajax warehouse sits, is another east–west route. That geography shapes the real cost of a stop more than the posted price does: a station on your side of Westney, on the way you’re already heading, costs almost nothing extra to reach. One across the median can mean a U-turn at the next light and a wait to get back out.
If you drive north toward the 407, note that Highway 407 is toll-free from Brock Road east to Highway 115, while the 407 ETR west of Brock still charges tolls (407 ETR rates). A fuel run that pulls you onto the tolled section west of Brock is almost never worth it.
Costco’s Ajax warehouse at 150 Kingston Rd E lists a gas station among its services (Costco Ajax). Costco fuel is for members only, so read our Costco gas guide before you count it as an option.
Read the full address when station names differ
A station title can describe a nearby intersection or keep an old label. Shell’s own Ajax page, for example, gives the address as 2 Westney Road South while its location title uses an intersection-style name (Shell station page, checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). Use the street address and the mapped entrance to decide which side of the road you’ll be on, not the title.
Using GasBuddy Ajax results
- Set the search to where you’ll actually buy. Autocomplete shows many people searching “GasBuddy Ajax Whitby Oshawa” or “Ajax Pickering”. If you’re crossing Durham anyway, a wider area is fair; if you’re popping out from home, keep it tight.
- Open each station and match the full street address before getting directions. Check which side of Westney, Salem or Kingston Road the entrance is on.
- Compare the same grade and similar report ages. A cheap regular report from yesterday isn’t comparable with a fresh one this morning.
- Count the turn-and-return. A wrong-side entrance can add a couple of kilometres and a long left turn.
- Confirm at the pump. Start on the official GasBuddy website for current reports; the price on the pump is the one you pay.
Ajax worked example: is the extra drive worth it?
This is a hypothetical comparison to show the arithmetic, not a quoted Ajax price. You plan to buy 50 litres; a station on the far side of the 401 is 8 cents per litre cheaper but adds 12 km of driving there and back.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross saving | 50 × 8/100 | C$4.00 |
| Extra driving fuel cost | 12 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litre | C$1.54 |
| Net saving before time and other costs | Gross saving − extra fuel | C$2.46 |
The extra driving eats 39% of the gross saving and leaves C$2.46. That’s worth it if you’re not short on time; if the detour means sitting through two long lights at a 401 ramp, maybe not. Put your own numbers into the trip fuel cost calculator.
Will gas prices in Ajax go up tomorrow?
We can’t predict that. Gas Wizard, run by Dan McTeague of Canadians for Affordable Energy, publishes next-day forecasts based on wholesale prices (Gas Wizard about page). Its city list doesn’t include Ajax, but it does cover Oshawa, Toronto and the GTA (Gas Wizard predictions). Treat any forecast as a guide, not a promise from Ajax stations.
Which should I use for directions: the title or the address?
The address, plus the entrance shown on the map. A short station title on its own can put you on the wrong side of the road.
