Gas prices in Abbotsford: the tax line, the Costco question and the border

We don’t publish live prices, so check a current report before you drive anywhere. What we can tell you is why Abbotsford often gets mentioned as the place Metro Vancouver drivers wait to fill up, how much of that is tax and how much is just competition, and how to decide whether the Costco on Sumas Way is worth the stop on your trip.

What’s in the price at an Abbotsford pump

Abbotsford belongs to the Fraser Valley Regional District, not Metro Vancouver. That matters because the 18.5¢-a-litre dedicated fuel tax that funds TransLink only applies to fuel bought inside the South Coast transportation service region, which the province describes as running east to and including Langley, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

As of November 2026, the taxes on a litre of regular gasoline in Abbotsford are:

TaxAbbotsford (“rest of B.C.”)Metro Vancouver, for comparison
B.C. motor fuel tax, including the 6.75¢ BCTFA portion14.50¢/L27.00¢/L (includes 18.50¢ for TransLink)
B.C. carbon tax0¢ (eliminated 1 April 2025)0¢
Federal excise tax0¢ until 31 January 2027 (temporary suspension)Same
GST5%, charged on the price including the taxes aboveSame

So the built-in tax gap with Langley or Burnaby is 12.5¢ a litre, or about 13.1¢ once GST is added on top, because Natural Resources Canada notes that GST is charged on provincial road taxes too. It is not the full 18.5¢: the general provincial portion is lower inside the TransLink area (1.75¢ versus 7.75¢). And a tax gap is not a price promise. Stations set their own prices, so on a given day the difference can be bigger, smaller or gone.

The federal excise relief is also set to step down: under the extension passed into law in October 2026, the rate is 5¢/L from 1 February to 31 March 2027 and returns to the full 10¢/L on 1 April 2027. Expect those dates to show up at the pump.

Where Abbotsford drivers usually fill up

Most fuel stops sit along three roads. Highway 1 crosses the city east–west, and its exit 92 meets Highway 11 (Sumas Way), which runs north toward Mission and south to the Abbotsford–Huntingdon border crossing. The old Fraser Highway reaches the Trans-Canada in the Clearbrook neighbourhood.

Expect slower trips on Highway 1 for a while: the province lists the Mt. Lehman Road to Highway 11 section as under construction, with completion anticipated in 2031. A cheaper station across an interchange that’s in a work zone can cost you more time than the pennies are worth.

The Costco question

Costco’s own page for its Abbotsford warehouse at 1127 Sumas Way lists a gas station, which is why “GasBuddy Abbotsford Costco” is such a common search. Treat it as one more candidate, not an automatic winner. Make one comparison: the club pump you can actually use against the best ordinary station on your planned route, in the same grade, with the extra driving and the likely queue counted. A members-only price only matters if you’re a member. Our Costco gas price guide covers the membership side.

Using GasBuddy Abbotsford results

  1. Search Abbotsford itself, not “Fraser Valley”, and check each address. Aldergrove stations can appear nearby but sit inside the TransLink area, so they carry the higher tax.
  2. Put the Costco pump and your best ordinary candidate side by side in the same grade.
  3. Note when each price was reported. An evening report may not survive the next morning.
  4. If the Costco figure only wins once you ignore the extra drive or the wait, it isn’t the cheaper stop for this trip.

Start on the official GasBuddy website for current reports, and trust the pump sign over any listing.

What Abbotsford search results show

An Abbotsford directory returned in search includes dated GasBuddy entries; the page’s existence alone does not establish how fresh those reports are. See the referenced page. Checked 4 November 2026; recheck the page before relying on it.

Abbotsford worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

This is an invented comparison to show the arithmetic, not a quoted Abbotsford price. Assume you will buy 35 litres and the alternative is 3 cents per litre cheaper.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving35 × 3/100C$1.05
Extra driving fuel cost6 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litreC$0.77
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$0.28

The extra driving swallows 73% of the C$1.05 saving, leaving 28 cents before your time. A station already on your route is probably the better pick. Rerun it with your own fill, fuel economy and detour in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Why is gas cheaper in Abbotsford?

Mostly because Abbotsford is outside the TransLink service region, so the provincial motor fuel tax is 14.5¢/L instead of 27¢/L. That gives Abbotsford stations about 13¢ a litre of room (GST included) compared with Langley. Local competition decides how much of it actually reaches the pump sign.

Is it worth filling up in Sumas or Lynden?

Sometimes, but compare like with like. U.S. stations price in U.S. dollars per U.S. gallon (one gallon is 3.785 litres), and Washington adds a state gas tax of 56.5¢ a gallon from 1 July 2026 on top of the 18.4¢ federal tax. Convert with the exchange rate your card actually charges using our fuel price converter, then add any foreign transaction fee and the time in line. CBSA posts current wait times for Abbotsford–Huntingdon (Sumas) and Aldergrove (Lynden).

Should I make a separate trip just for Costco fuel?

Work out the gross saving on the litres you’ll actually buy, subtract the fuel the extra trip burns, then decide whether the waiting time is worth what’s left.
