Gas prices in Thunder Bay: expect bigger swings, and confirm which price is yours
Thunder Bay gas prices behave differently from southern Ontario’s. They can sit well below the provincial average one week and well above it a few weeks later. A local search may also include on-reserve stations, where the posted price might not be the one you pay. We don’t show live prices; this page explains both issues and how to make a sound choice anyway.
Why Thunder Bay prices move differently
The Ontario government’s motor fuel prices page explains that wholesale gasoline prices are strongly influenced by regional benchmark markets, and names different ones for different cities: “New York Harbor for Toronto prices and Edmonton for Thunder Bay prices” (Ontario motor fuel prices). So Thunder Bay’s pump prices take their lead from a different wholesale market than Toronto’s, and the two can move out of step.
You can see that in the province’s weekly survey (dataset). Our calculation for regular unleaded over the 52 weeks to 2 November 2026:
- On average, Thunder Bay ended up close to the Ontario average, 0.9 cents a litre below it. It was below in 31 weeks and above in 21.
- The gap ranged from 19.8 cents below (week of 8 September 2026: 162.7 against 182.5) to 25.6 cents above (week of 26 October 2026: 198.3 against 172.7).
- The following week, 2 November 2026, Thunder Bay was back at 174.4 cents against 175.1 for Ontario.
- Thunder Bay’s weekly figure moved by 5 cents or more in 31 of 52 weeks, compared with 17 for the Ontario average.
Because prices move this much, a provincial average or a report from a few days ago tells you much less in Thunder Bay. Recent reports count for more.
What’s in the price at a Thunder Bay pump
At a regular off-reserve purchase, as of November 2026:
- Ontario gasoline tax: 9.0 cents a litre on unleaded, included in the posted price (Ontario Ministry of Finance).
- Federal excise tax: suspended at zero until 31 January 2027 (normally 10 cents), with Finance Canada planning 5 cents for February and March 2027 and the full rate from 1 April 2027 (Finance Canada).
- HST: 13% (CRA), applied to the price including the per-litre taxes (Natural Resources Canada).
These are the same everywhere in Ontario, so the swings above come from wholesale and retail pricing, not tax.
On-reserve stations: confirm the conditions, don’t assume them
People search for “gas prices Thunder Bay reserve”, so here’s what can be said accurately. Mountain View describes itself as a gas station and convenience store at 686 City Road on Fort William First Nation, with 24-hour self-serve and daytime full service (Mountain View, checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). Its site says nothing about tax-exempt sales or who particular prices apply to, and we draw no conclusion about either.
At the provincial level, Ontario lets eligible First Nations individuals, bands and certain related entities buy gasoline for their own use without the Ontario gasoline tax, but only at an authorized on-reserve retailer and on showing the right documents (Ontario Ministry of Finance). That page covers only the provincial gas tax. It doesn’t tell you whether a specific station is authorized, or what any given customer will pay. Ask the station which price and conditions apply to your purchase before you drive there.
Picking a Thunder Bay stop
In a market that moves this fast, a recently confirmed price on a route you already drive usually beats a cheaper-looking report across town. If you’re heading to the US, the CBSA’s Pigeon River port of entry took over the services of the closed Thunder Bay CBSA office in 2020. Any US price will be in US dollars per gallon, so use the fuel price converter before comparing.
Using GasBuddy Thunder Bay results
- Compare one grade and give report time extra weight. A two-day-old price can be badly out of date here.
- If a listing might be an on-reserve station, check with the operator which price applies to you before counting it.
- Compare the price you’d actually be charged with a convenient station on your route.
- Confirm at the pump. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.
Thunder Bay worked example: is the extra drive worth it?
This is an invented comparison for the arithmetic, not a quoted Thunder Bay price. Say you’ll buy 50 litres and the other station is 5 cents per litre cheaper, 12 km out of your way.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross saving | 50 × 5/100 | C$2.50 |
| Extra driving fuel cost | 12 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litre | C$1.54 |
| Net saving before time and other costs | Gross saving − extra fuel | C$0.96 |
The detour uses 62% of the saving and leaves 96 cents. If the 5-cent gap came from an older report and prices have since moved, it could disappear entirely. Try your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.
Why do Thunder Bay gas prices jump so much?
The province names Edmonton as the wholesale benchmark for Thunder Bay, rather than New York Harbor as for Toronto, so local prices are influenced by a different wholesale market. The ministry doesn’t break down weekly moves, so we won’t explain any particular jump beyond that.
Can I assume a listed reserve price applies to everyone?
No. Ontario’s exemption depends on who’s buying and on the retailer being authorized. Ask the operator before you make the trip.
