Gas prices in Sudbury: pick a backup station before you set off

It’s easy to assume Northern Ontario always pays more for gas. Over the past year, Ontario’s own weekly figures show Sudbury usually paid less than the provincial average, sometimes much less. Sudbury prices also move around more from week to week. We don’t show live prices. This page explains what the numbers mean and how to avoid chasing a stale report across Greater Sudbury.

How Sudbury compares with the rest of Ontario

Ontario publishes weekly average pump prices, taxes included, for a set of markets that includes Sudbury (Ontario motor fuel prices; weekly dataset). We ran the numbers for regular unleaded over the 52 weeks to 2 November 2026:

  • Sudbury was below the Ontario average in 49 of 52 weeks, and 9.4 cents a litre below it on average.
  • The widest gap was in the week of 24 August 2026: 143.7 cents in Sudbury against 173.0 cents for Ontario.
  • On 2 November 2026, Sudbury was 151.7 cents and Ontario 175.1.
  • Sudbury’s weekly figure moved by 5 cents or more in 26 of those weeks. The Ontario average did that in 17.

The ministry doesn’t explain the gap, and we won’t guess at the cause. The practical takeaway is that Sudbury prices can change quickly, so a report from a few days ago is weaker evidence here than it would be in a steadier market.

What’s in the price at a Sudbury pump

The taxes are the same as anywhere else in Ontario, so they don’t explain why Sudbury differs. As of November 2026:

  • Ontario’s gasoline tax is 9.0 cents a litre on unleaded and is included in the pump price (Ontario Ministry of Finance).
  • The federal excise tax, usually 10 cents a litre, is suspended until 31 January 2027. Finance Canada plans 5 cents for February and March 2027 and the full rate from 1 April 2027 (Finance Canada).
  • HST at 13% (CRA) applies to the whole pre-tax price, per-litre taxes included (Natural Resources Canada).

If you drive south to Toronto often, note that the Toronto figures in the same survey ran above the provincial average for most of the year. Filling before you leave Sudbury has usually been the better habit, but check on the day.

Where Sudbury drivers usually fill up

The Kingsway is the obvious example of a corridor with several options close together. Esso lists a station at 1003 Kingsway (checked 4 November 2026; it confirms a location, not a price), and Costco’s Sudbury warehouse at 1465 Kingsway lists a gas station for members. Costco’s own page notes that its posted prices may not match the pump at the time of purchase. Our Costco gas price guide covers the membership side.

If your backup is on the other side of the city, the fuel to reach it can cost more than it saves. That’s why the fallback should sit on your route.

Verify a convenient fallback before leaving

Before you head out, save two stations: your first choice and a backup on the same route. If the first station’s pump price doesn’t match the report, you already know where else to go. You won’t end up chasing the original number around town. One wrong report shouldn’t turn into a string of detours that cost more than the saving you were after.

Using GasBuddy Sudbury results

  1. Search from where you’ll actually be: the Kingsway, your own neighbourhood or a point on your route.
  2. Pick a first choice and a fallback on the same route, both in your grade.
  3. Give report age extra weight. In a market that moves this much, an older low price is a weak lead.
  4. If the pump disagrees with the report, use the real price and recalculate before driving anywhere else.
  5. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.

Sudbury worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

This is an invented comparison to show the arithmetic, not a quoted Sudbury price. Say you’ll buy 45 litres, the other station is 6 cents per litre cheaper, and it adds 14 km.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving45 × 6/100C$2.70
Extra driving fuel cost14 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litreC$1.79
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$0.91

Two-thirds of the saving goes on the extra driving, which leaves 91 cents before your time. If the price turns out wrong when you arrive, you’ve lost the C$1.79 for nothing, which is why the fallback should be on your route. Run your own figures in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is gas usually cheaper in Sudbury than the Ontario average?

In the 52 weeks to 2 November 2026, yes: Ontario’s weekly survey put Sudbury below the provincial average in 49 weeks. That says nothing certain about next week, and the gap moved a lot.

What should I do when the reported price is wrong?

Pay attention to the pump, not the app. Recalculate whether the next station is still worth it at the real price, and go to your fallback only if it is.
