Gas prices in Winnipeg: compare like-for-like freshness windows

Two Winnipeg price sites can show different “cheapest” stations at the same moment, and both can be right about their own data. We don’t carry live prices, so this page focuses on reading those numbers properly: what Manitoba’s taxes add, why the Perimeter matters, and how to compare reports of the same age before you drive anywhere.

What’s in the price at a Winnipeg pump

Manitoba’s gas tax has moved around more than most provinces’ in the past few years, which is why people still search for it.

  • 2024: Manitoba’s 14¢/L provincial tax on gasoline and road diesel (Government of Manitoba, November 2023) was suspended from 1 January 2024 (Government of Manitoba, February 2024), and the holiday was later extended to 31 December 2024 (gov.mb.ca).
  • Since 1 January 2025: the tax came back at a permanently lower 12.5¢ per litre (Government of Manitoba news release). As of November 2026, Manitoba’s Taxation Division still lists 12.5¢ for clear gasoline and diesel (Manitoba Finance).
  • Federal excise tax: 0¢ at the moment. The 10¢/L tax was suspended on 20 April 2026, and the suspension now runs to 31 January 2027. Gasoline goes back to 5¢/L on 1 February 2027 and 10¢/L on 1 April 2027 (Finance Canada).
  • Carbon charge: removed in Manitoba, as everywhere it applied, from 1 April 2025 (Finance Canada).
  • GST: 5% on top of the price including fuel taxes. Manitoba’s 7% RST isn’t charged on gasoline; NRCan notes provincial sales taxes don’t apply to fuel outside HST provinces and Quebec (NRCan).

There’s no Winnipeg-only fuel tax (NRCan lists local gasoline taxes only in Vancouver, Victoria and Montréal), so a station just outside the city in Headingley pays the same taxes as one on Portage Avenue. Any price difference between them is the retailer’s, not the government’s.

Where Winnipeg drivers usually fill up

The Perimeter Highway (PTH 100 on the south side, PTH 101 on the north) loops about 90 km around the city and meets the Trans-Canada at both ends of town, at Portage Avenue in the west and Fermor Avenue in the east. To the west, PTH 1 runs through the RM of Headingley before reaching city limits.

That geography gives you two kinds of trips. On a highway run, the useful question is which stations sit near your Perimeter exit or on the Trans-Canada itself. On an errand inside the city, it’s which stations line the arterials you’re already using. Driving inside the Perimeter to save a few cents on a highway trip, or out to it from downtown, usually eats the saving.

Compare like-for-like freshness windows

Price sites differ in which stations they track and how old a report can be before it drops off. One site’s lowest price is the lowest among its own reports, not proof of the city’s cheapest station. Before you decide one site is “more accurate”, check two things: how many stations each shows, and how old the lowest few prices are. A two-hour-old report on your route beats a lower city average every time.

Using GasBuddy Winnipeg results

  1. Search Winnipeg, Manitoba (or your postal code) and pick your grade before sorting.
  2. Look at report ages on the top five or so results, not just the top one.
  3. If another Winnipeg site disagrees, compare the timestamps first; the gap is often just a newer report on one side.
  4. Decide whether you’re filling on a Perimeter trip or a city errand, and only shortlist stations on that path.
  5. Open the station on the official GasBuddy website or app for the latest report, and treat the pump sign as the final word.

Winnipeg worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

These figures are invented to show the arithmetic, not a quoted Winnipeg price. You’re buying 40 litres and a station off your route is 5 cents per litre cheaper, but reaching it adds 8 km.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving40 × 5/100C$2.00
Extra driving fuel cost8 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litreC$1.02
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$0.98

Just over half the saving goes on the detour, leaving under a dollar. Unless the cheaper station is on your way, the one in front of you is the better stop. Try your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is there a gas tax in Manitoba right now?

Yes. The provincial fuel tax is 12.5¢ per litre, in place since 1 January 2025 after the 2024 holiday ended. What’s on pause is the federal excise tax, which stays at zero until 31 January 2027 (details above).

Does the lowest price on one website prove it’s Winnipeg’s cheapest?

No. It’s the lowest among the stations and reports that site holds. A station it doesn’t track, or a newer price change, can beat it.

Will Winnipeg gas prices change tomorrow?

We can’t predict daily moves, and we’d be wary of anyone who claims certainty. The dated changes we can point to are the federal excise steps on 1 February and 1 April 2027.
