Gas prices in Toronto: search by neighbourhood, not by city

“Toronto” is too big to be a useful search area. Two searches can centre the city in different places and give you different “cheapest” stations, neither of them near you. We don’t show live prices. What helps is narrowing the search to where you’ll actually stop, knowing what the province’s own numbers say about Toronto, and treating tomorrow’s forecast as a forecast.

What’s in the price at a Toronto pump

Toronto doesn’t add a city gas tax. Natural Resources Canada says only three Canadian municipalities do: Vancouver, Victoria and Montreal (NRCan). So a Toronto litre carries the same taxes as one in Oshawa or Sudbury. As of November 2026:

  • Ontario gasoline tax: 9.0 cents a litre on unleaded. It’s collected at the wholesale level and included in the pump price (Ontario Ministry of Finance).
  • Federal excise tax: suspended at zero since 20 April 2026 and until 31 January 2027. It’s normally 10 cents; Finance Canada plans 5 cents for February and March 2027 and 10 cents from 1 April 2027 (Finance Canada).
  • HST: 13% (CRA), calculated on the price after the per-litre taxes are added (NRCan).

When you compare Toronto with Montreal or Vancouver, that missing municipal tax is part of the difference. Within the GTA, it isn’t: Mississauga, Brampton and Ajax pay the same taxes as Toronto.

How Toronto compares with the rest of Ontario

Ontario’s weekly fuel price survey splits Toronto into West and East markets (Ontario motor fuel prices; weekly dataset). We calculated this from the regular unleaded figures for the 52 weeks to 2 November 2026:

MarketWeeks above Ontario averageAverage gap vs Ontario
Toronto West49 of 52+1.7¢/L
Toronto East48 of 52+1.2¢/L

On 2 November 2026 the figures were 178.0 (West) and 177.9 (East) against 175.1 for Ontario. West and East differed by only about half a cent on average, so which side of the city you’re on matters much less than which station you choose.

The province also notes that Toronto’s wholesale prices are strongly influenced by the New York Harbor benchmark (same ministry page), while Thunder Bay’s are tied to Edmonton.

Where Toronto drivers usually fill up

The realistic answer is wherever you already are. In a city where a short detour can take a long time in traffic, the cheapest station on your route usually beats the cheapest station in the city. If your trip uses the 407, check tolls for your route. The province removed tolls only on the provincially owned 407 East, from Brock Road to Highway 35/115, on 1 June 2025 (2025 Ontario Budget; Town of Whitby).

Toronto search results mix broad directories with pages centred on a particular reference point (example directory, checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). Before comparing two lists, check where each one is centred.

Using GasBuddy Toronto results

  1. Treat GasBuddy Toronto as a starting label. Set the location to your neighbourhood, postal code or the route you’re driving.
  2. Look at the map area before comparing lowest prices. Two searches with different centres aren’t comparable.
  3. Shortlist three or four stations nearby in your grade, then widen to the GTA only if none works.
  4. Check the report times and prefer the freshest reports in your shortlist.
  5. Confirm the pump price. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.

Toronto worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

This is an invented comparison for the arithmetic, not a quoted Toronto price. Say you’ll buy 30 litres and a station 4 km out of your way is 6 cents per litre cheaper.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving30 × 6/100C$1.80
Extra driving fuel cost4 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litreC$0.51
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$1.29

On fuel alone the detour uses 28% of the saving and leaves C$1.29. In Toronto, though, the real cost is time. Decide whether C$1.29 is worth the extra minutes in traffic. Try your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.

What will gas prices be in Toronto tomorrow?

We don’t forecast prices. Next-day GTA predictions are regularly reported in local news, for example from Dan McTeague of Canadians for Affordable Energy (CP24 example). Use a forecast to decide whether to fill today or wait. It won’t tell you which station to pick, and it isn’t a guaranteed pump price.

Why can two Toronto searches show different stations?

They may use different centre points, search radii or coverage. Check the map extent before you compare their lowest numbers.
