Gas prices in Hamilton: keep Hamilton Mountain in the same comparison

Hamilton has a feature no flat city has: the escarpment. A station that looks a few hundred metres away on the map can be at the bottom of a hill you’d have to drive down and back up. We don’t publish live prices, but this page will help you compare Mountain and lower-city stations by the drive you’d really make, not the straight line between dots.

What’s in the price at a Hamilton pump

Taxes are the same on the Mountain, in the lower city, in Stoney Creek and in Ancaster. Here’s the breakdown as of November 2026:

TaxRateSource
Ontario gasoline tax9.0¢ per litre (unleaded)Ontario Ministry of Finance
Federal excise tax0¢ until 31 Jan 2027; 5¢ from 1 Feb to 31 Mar 2027; 10¢ from 1 Apr 2027Finance Canada
HST13%, applied after the per-litre taxesCRA, NRCan
Consumer carbon chargeRemoved 1 April 2025Finance Canada

Because every Hamilton station pays the same taxes, a price gap between two of them reflects the retailer, the location and timing. Taxes only matter when you compare across time: prices in February and April 2027 will include the excise tax coming back in two steps.

Mountain versus lower city: count the escarpment

Hamilton’s upper and lower city are joined by a handful of roads up the escarpment, and when one closes the others take the load. In 2023, for example, the Claremont Access’s downbound lanes were closed for months and commuters heading downtown used the Jolley Cut instead (Global News). That’s the reason straight-line distance misleads here: a cheap station just below the brow may be a long loop away if your usual access is closed or jammed.

Practical rule: if you live on the Mountain, compare Mountain stations first. Only add a lower-city station when you’re already going down for another reason. The same applies in reverse.

Where Hamilton drivers usually fill up

Autocomplete suggestions show people searching “Upper James”, “West Mountain”, “Hamilton Mountain East” and “Stoney Creek” rather than Hamilton as a whole. That’s a good instinct: search the area where you’ll be.

Two Costco warehouses in the Hamilton area list gas stations: Stoney Creek at 1330 South Service Rd and Ancaster at 100 Legend Crt (Costco Stoney Creek, Costco Ancaster). They’re members-only, and lineups can eat into the saving, so read our Costco gas guide before planning around them.

Using GasBuddy Hamilton results

Whether you search GasBuddy Hamilton or GasBuddy Hamilton Mountain, the steps are the same:

  1. Set your location to where you’ll actually be, on the Mountain or below it. Don’t leave the map centred on downtown if you’re filling up somewhere else.
  2. Check the route, not the pin. Ask the map for driving directions and look at which access it uses. If a station needs a trip down the escarpment and back, count both legs.
  3. Compare the same grade and report age. Station-map pages for Hamilton help with discovery but don’t guarantee the cheapest offer (example map listing, checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it).
  4. Widen the search only if the arithmetic supports it, and confirm the price at the pump. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.

Hamilton worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

This is a hypothetical comparison, not a quoted Hamilton price. You’re on the Mountain, buying 40 litres. A lower-city station is 8 cents per litre cheaper. On the map it’s about 2 km away in a straight line, but the drive down and back via an escarpment access adds 8 km.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving40 × 8/100C$3.20
Extra driving fuel cost8 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litreC$1.02
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$2.18

The detour uses about a third (32%) of the gross saving and leaves C$2.18. A guess based on the 2 km straight line would have put the cost at about C$0.26, a quarter of the real figure. The climb back up the escarpment also tends to use more fuel than flat driving, so treat C$1.02 as a minimum. Run your own figures in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is gas cheaper on Hamilton Mountain or in the lower city?

There’s no fixed answer; it changes with each station’s pricing. What is fixed is the extra drive between the two, so compare stations on your own level first and only cross the escarpment when the saving clearly covers the round trip.

Will Hamilton gas prices change tomorrow?

We can’t forecast prices. Gas Wizard publishes next-day predictions for Hamilton (Gas Wizard), produced from wholesale price analysis by Dan McTeague of Canadians for Affordable Energy (about). Use it as a hint about whether to fill today, not as a guarantee.
