Gas prices in St. Catharines: read the full address, not the road name
St. Catharines has roads named after its neighbours, so a “Welland Avenue” result is often right in town rather than in Welland. That’s the first trap. The second is driving to Welland or Niagara Falls for a price that only looked cheaper. We don’t show live prices, but here’s how to read a St. Catharines search properly and when a Niagara detour pays.
What’s in the price at a St. Catharines pump
The tax part of a St. Catharines litre is identical at every station in the city, and across Ontario:
| Tax | As of November 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario gasoline tax | 9.0¢ per litre (unleaded), included in the pump price | Ontario Ministry of Finance |
| Federal excise tax | 0¢ while suspended (20 April 2026 to 31 January 2027); normally 10¢ | Finance Canada |
| HST | 13%, charged on the price including the per-litre taxes | CRA; NRCan |
Finance Canada plans to bring the excise tax back at 5 cents a litre in February and March 2027 and at 10 cents from 1 April 2027 (same source). If you track your fuel spending, expect that step up even if nothing changes locally. Because the taxes are the same everywhere in Niagara, any gap between St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls comes from station pricing, not tax.
How St. Catharines compares with the province
St. Catharines is one of the markets in Ontario’s weekly fuel price survey, which reports average pump prices with taxes included (Ontario motor fuel prices; weekly dataset). Our calculation from that data: over the 52 weeks to 2 November 2026, St. Catharines’ regular unleaded figure was below the Ontario average in 51 weeks, and averaged 2.2 cents a litre below it. It also averaged about 3.9 cents below Toronto West. On 2 November 2026 it was 174.8 cents against 175.1 for Ontario.
So if you commute between Niagara and the GTA, filling at the Niagara end has usually been the better bet. That’s a pattern in weekly averages, not a promise about any particular station or week.
Where St. Catharines drivers usually fill up
The QEW and Highway 406 both pass through the city (the city ward map uses them as boundaries), and the 406 links the QEW with Welland (City of Welland). For many trips, those two corridors decide where you can realistically stop. A station just off the exit you already use is often worth more than a cheaper one across town.
As an example of the address issue, Gales lists its station at 143 Welland Avenue, St. Catharines, at Francis Street. It offers regular, mid-grade and premium plus full serve (checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). If you want full service, that’s the kind of detail an operator page confirms and a price app may not.
Using GasBuddy St. Catharines results
- Read the municipality in each address. A road named after a neighbouring town is not the same as that town.
- Keep Welland and Niagara Falls results as separate options and count the extra driving for each.
- Compare one grade, with similar report times.
- If service level matters (full serve or self-serve), check the operator’s page, because the reported price may assume one or the other.
- Confirm at the pump. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.
St. Catharines worked example: is a trip to Welland worth it?
This is an invented comparison for the arithmetic, not a quoted price. Say a Welland station shows 4 cents per litre less, you need 40 litres, and getting there down Highway 406 and back adds 30 km.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross saving | 40 × 4/100 | C$1.60 |
| Extra driving fuel cost | 30 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litre | C$3.84 |
| Net saving before time and other costs | Gross saving − extra fuel | −C$2.24 |
The trip costs more than twice what it saves. A cross-Niagara fuel run only works if you’re going anyway; then count only the extra distance to the pump. Use your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.
Does a Welland Avenue result belong to Welland?
Not from the street name alone. Check the municipality in the address; Welland Avenue runs through St. Catharines.
Is gas usually cheaper in St. Catharines than Toronto?
In Ontario’s weekly survey for the year to 2 November 2026, St. Catharines averaged roughly 4 cents a litre below Toronto West. Individual stations vary, so check recent reports before you plan around it.
