Gas prices in Welland: a store page isn’t a fuel quote

When you look up a Welland station, you’ll often land on the operator’s own page: address, hours, car wash, maybe a convenience store. That’s useful, but it rarely tells you what regular costs right now. For a smart fill in Welland you need two separate things: proof the station is where you think it is, and a recent price in your grade. We don’t show live prices, so here’s how to get both and how to judge a trip out of town.

What’s in the price at a Welland pump

Welland’s fuel taxes are Ontario’s, with nothing added locally. As of November 2026, every litre of regular includes 9.0 cents of Ontario gasoline tax, built into the posted price (Ontario Ministry of Finance). There’s no federal excise tax at the moment. The usual 10 cents a litre has been suspended since 20 April 2026 and stays at zero until 31 January 2027. Finance Canada then plans 5 cents for February and March and the full 10 cents from 1 April 2027 (Finance Canada). On top of that comes 13% HST (CRA), worked out on the price after the per-litre taxes (Natural Resources Canada).

Why it matters here: the taxes in Welland, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls are identical. If one town looks cheaper, that’s station pricing, and it can change from one day to the next.

Distinguish store details from a fuel quote

An operator page is good evidence that a station exists at a given address and offers the services you need. Mobil, for example, lists a Welland station at 136 Thorold Road (checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). What the page usually won’t give you is a current price for your grade.

So use the two sources for different jobs:

  • Operator page: confirms the address, opening hours and services such as full serve or a car wash.
  • Recent price report or the pump display: tells you the price.

Opening hours help you avoid arriving at a closed station. They don’t tell you anything about price.

Where Welland drivers usually fill up

Welland has highway access via Highway 406, which connects to the QEW (City of Welland). If you commute north on the 406, a station near your on-ramp is a natural comparison against one in St. Catharines at the other end.

Ontario’s weekly fuel price survey doesn’t publish a Welland figure. St. Catharines is the nearest market it covers (dataset). Treat that as Niagara background, not a Welland price.

The same City of Welland page lists four Niagara bridges into New York State. If you’re crossing anyway and want to compare a US price, it’ll be in US dollars per gallon. Convert it with the fuel price converter, then add any bridge tolls and the extra driving before deciding.

Using GasBuddy Welland results

  1. Set the search point to your actual stop in Welland, not the wider Niagara region.
  2. Compare stations in the same grade with recent report times.
  3. Use the operator’s page to confirm the address, hours and services. Don’t expect it to confirm a price.
  4. If St. Catharines or Niagara Falls results appear, treat them as separate trips with their own distance.
  5. Confirm at the pump. For current reports, start on the official GasBuddy website.

Welland worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

This is an invented comparison to show the arithmetic, not a quoted Welland price. Say you’ll buy 45 litres and a station 10 km out of your way is 8 cents per litre cheaper.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving45 × 8/100C$3.60
Extra driving fuel cost10 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litreC$1.28
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$2.32

The detour uses about a third of the saving and leaves C$2.32 before your time, so this one can pay off, provided the 8-cent gap comes from a recent report. Try your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.

Is gas cheaper in Welland than St. Catharines?

There’s no official weekly figure for Welland to compare, and both cities pay the same taxes. Compare recent station reports on the day, and count the Highway 406 drive if you’d be going just for fuel.

Do opening hours tell me the pump price?

No. They help with access. You still need a current fuel report or the price displayed at the station.
