Gas prices in Vancouver: do not confuse Vancouver with the whole region

“Vancouver” on a price list often means all of Metro Vancouver, which TransLink counts as 21 municipalities plus Electoral Area A and Tsawwassen First Nation. The cheapest pin may be in Richmond or Coquitlam. We don’t post live prices. This page breaks down what’s actually in a Vancouver litre, which carries the highest provincial fuel tax rate in B.C., explains why that tax doesn’t change across the region, and shows how to find a genuinely better stop from where you are.

What’s in the price at a Vancouver pump

Here’s the tax on a litre of regular gasoline bought in Vancouver, as of November 2026:

ComponentRateSource
B.C. general motor fuel tax1.75¢B.C. Ministry of Finance
BC Transportation Financing Authority6.75¢Same
TransLink (South Coast region)18.50¢Same; also confirmed in B.C. Budget 2026
B.C. motor fuel tax total27.00¢
B.C. carbon tax0¢Eliminated 1 April 2025
Federal excise tax0¢ until 31 January 2027 (normally 10¢)Finance Canada
GST5% of the totalCRA

Outside the TransLink region the B.C. motor fuel tax is 14.50¢, and in the Victoria area it’s 20.00¢. Inside the region, though, it’s the same everywhere: TransLink’s area covers all of Metro Vancouver, from Lions Bay and Bowen Island to Langley and Maple Ridge. So driving from Vancouver to Burnaby or Richmond for gas saves you nothing in tax. Any gap you find is just the station.

Two dates to keep in mind: Finance Canada says the federal excise tax would come back at 5¢ a litre on 1 February 2027 and at the full 10¢ on 1 April 2027.

Where Vancouver drivers usually fill up

Where you fill up depends on which corridor you’re already on.

On city streets every extra stop means lights, turns and sometimes a block-long loop to get back in the right direction, so the station on your side of the road often beats a slightly cheaper one across traffic.

Do not confuse Vancouver with the whole region

Start with the municipality and address you mean. A result marketed to “Vancouver drivers” may cover the whole region, which helps if a cheap station happens to sit on your trip and misleads if it’s 15 km the wrong way. One directory returned in search breaks out a separate Central Vancouver area instead of treating the region as one place (checked 4 November 2026; recheck before relying on it). That’s the right instinct: judge the route to the station’s entrance, not the city name in the page title.

Using GasBuddy Vancouver results

  1. Zoom the GasBuddy Vancouver map to your neighbourhood or route rather than the default regional view.
  2. Check each station’s municipality. “Vancouver” listings can include Burnaby, Richmond and the North Shore.
  3. Compare the same grade and report time, and favour the most recent reports.
  4. Ignore the region-wide minimum unless it’s actually on your way.

Begin with the official GasBuddy website and confirm the price at the pump.

Vancouver worked example: is the extra drive worth it?

This is an invented comparison to show the arithmetic, not a quoted Vancouver price. Assume you will buy 40 litres and the alternative is 4 cents per litre cheaper.

ItemCalculationResult
Gross saving40 × 4/100C$1.60
Extra driving fuel cost8 extra km × 8 L/100 km ÷ 100 × C$1.60 per litreC$1.02
Net saving before time and other costsGross saving − extra fuelC$0.58

The detour swallows 64% of the saving and leaves 58 cents, before the time spent in city traffic. A station already on your route usually wins. Test your own numbers in the trip fuel cost calculator.

What is the Vancouver gas price per gallon?

Multiply the price per litre by 3.785, since a U.S. gallon is 3.785 litres. For a hypothetical C$1.60 a litre, that’s about C$6.06 per U.S. gallon, still in Canadian dollars. Our fuel price converter also handles the exchange rate.

Am I looking at Vancouver, BC or Vancouver, Washington?

Check. Vancouver, Washington is a separate U.S. city, and searches like “cheapest gas Vancouver WA” return its stations priced in U.S. dollars per gallon. If the prices are in dollars per gallon, you’re on the wrong Vancouver.

Can anyone tell me tomorrow’s Vancouver gas price?

No one knows for sure. Gas Wizard publishes a next-day prediction for Vancouver, which some drivers use to decide whether to fill today. Treat it as an informed guess, not a quote.

Does this cover Vancouver Island?

No. The Victoria area pays its own 5.50¢ BC Transit fuel tax instead of TransLink’s, for 20.00¢ in total, and the rest of the island pays 14.50¢. Our BC hub has the full breakdown.
